SESSION 2 - Arctic Ocean: Physical Processes and their Effects on Climate and the Ecosystem
Conveners: Peigen Lin (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Robert S. Pickart (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), and G.W.K. Moore (University of Toronto)
As a focal point of climate change, the Arctic Ocean is undergoing dramatic and amplified changes. Air temperature has been experiencing the most rapid increase on Earth. In addition, more oceanic heat is being fluxed into the Arctic via the main Subarctic-Arctic pathways, i.e., through Bering Strait, Fram Strait and the Barents Sea Opening. This has resulted in an accelerated decline in sea ice concentration and thickness. The freshwater content in the Arctic has increased markedly, due to the acceleration of ice melt, increased Pacific Water inflow, and more river discharge. The excess freshwater can modulate the local stratification in the water column and alter the lateral circulation. Furthermore, it is thought that the increased freshwater content could lead to enhanced freshwater export into the Nordic Seas and Labrador Sea, impacting the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Alongside these changes in the physical drivers, the Arctic ecosystem is undergoing significant transformations. Primary production is on the rise, with under-ice blooms becoming more prevalent. Sub-polar species are encroaching into Arctic waters, while ocean acidification is becoming increasingly common. Additionally, widespread harmful algal blooms have recently been observed.
This session aims to understand: (1) Variations and dynamics of physical processes in the Arctic Ocean and their interaction with the subarctic regions in both the Pacific and Atlantic sectors; (2) Climate responses to the declining sea ice, including atmospheric feedbacks; and (3) The roles of the physical processes in regulating the Arctic ecosystem and biogeochemistry.
