Arctic Centre is a national and international hub of information and centre of excellence that conducts multidisciplinary research in changes in the Arctic region. It is located in the Arktikum House, Rovaniemi, Finland. The highly popular Arktikum is also home to the Science Centre of the Arctic Centre and the Provincial Museum of Lapland.

In the Arctic Centre, research is carried out especially in the entire Arctic region and Antarctica. Multidisciplinary research especially combines the perspectives of the natural sciences and social sciences.

Your tasks

The University Researcher’s task is to unite research on the global forces of change (such as the impacts of climate change, animate and inanimate nature, and interactions between people and the environment) with research on the resilience and adaptation of northern livelihoods.

The duties include the following:

  • First-rate multidisciplinary research conducted independently in northern regions
  • Acquisition of supplementary research funding and management of research projects
  • Provision of instruction in the Arctic Studies programme and supervision of doctoral students in the appointee’s own field of research
  • Innovative presentation of science in the Arctic Centre’s science centre
  • Popularisation of science

Qualification requirements

  • a doctor’s degree in geophysics (especially in research on snow)
  • academic competence demonstrated through publications and advanced knowledge of one’s own field of research
  • skills in communicating with decision makers and the general public
  • demonstrated skills in acquiring supplementary research funding and in managing research projects
  • experience in research on northern regions
  • proficiency in the Finnish and English languages

Salary: The university's salary system is based on the demand level of the task and personal performance. University Researcher basic salary component is placed in teaching and research staff requirement levels 6-7 according to which the salary is €3 747,44- €4 320,23 per month  In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid, which is a maximum of 50% of the task-basic salary component. The starting salary is around €4,350 - €5,270.
