The two-day seminar included presentations, poster sessions, and an interactive preview of a science exhibition opening on December 6, 2024, at Arktikum in Rovaniemi. The seminar was organized by the UArctic Thematic Network Nordic Snow Network, with participation from UArctic members University of Lapland, University of Oulu, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
Before the seminar, attendees visited the Arctic Space Centre of the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Sodankylä, touring measurement sites and learning about the center’s satellite data capabilities. Dr. Anna Kontu and Dr. Hannakaisa Lindqvist presented the center’s research, and the day ended with a dinner and reindeer feeding at a local reindeer farm.
The seminar featured six themed sessions. Thursday's sessions covered topics like “Everyday and Arctic Snow,” hydrological monitoring, and snow-related art, highlighted by a keynote from Antti Autti and a screening of Farewell to Snow by director Sanni Priha.
Friday’s sessions explored snow, ice, and water interactions, climate adaptation, and sustainable snowmaking. Presentations included lake ice thickness measurement, spatiotemporal snow cover analysis, and updates on infrastructure and projects like the Nordic Snow Network.
Next year, the seminar will continue in Oulu, Finland, advancing knowledge-sharing on snow research and climate adaptation.
