"Many Ukrainian students in Norway are having a very tough time now, both mentally and financially. In addition, it is important to us that Russian and Belarusian students are also included in this scheme. These students are as innocent in the war that has arisen as you and me," says Minister of Research and Higher Education Ola Borten Moe.
Therefore, the Government is establishing a scholarship scheme for the spring semester 2022. Each student who qualifies for the scholarship will be paid up to NOK 11,500 per month from March to August. PhD students are paid up to NOK 21,000.
"I am very happy that we have put this in place. It will be sad and unfair if these students have to cancel their studies in Norway because they can no longer afford it," says Borten Moe.
The background is that some Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian students in Norway now have financial problems due to the war. For example, because parents and others who have funded it until now can no longer continue with it, or because they have lost access to their money due to economic sanctions directed at Russia.
Eligibility:
- Students at universities, colleges, vocational schools and PhD students from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus
- Students who fund their studies themselves and have lost access to their funding due to the war
- The scheme does not include students with Ukrainian, Russian or Belarusian citizenship who have common rights through Lånekassen.
Students who believe that they qualify must apply for the scholarship from their own educational institution. The scheme will apply from 1 March to August 2022.
"Although this scheme will only apply until August, solutions will also be put in place from autumn 2022. We must ensure stability and predictability for the students in question," says Borten Moe.
