Duties / Responsibilities
Duties will include one or more of the following, depending on candidate strengths:
- Lead technical and economic analysis of multi-terminal MVDC distribution system between remote Alaskan villages. Analysis must include specification of power converters and operating strategies. Work closely with Utility partners and other ACEP Researchers to compare MVDC solution to traditional AC solution as well as continued operation as remote islanded diesel powered systems.
- Propose and lead innovative, effective, and practical approaches for stability analysis and monitoring of converter-dominated power systems at the hundreds of kW level. Research should include simulation components as well as hardware validation in a laboratory setting, with considerations for field deployment.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Candidates will be evaluated based on their past research and/or industry experience. Candidates must have both power systems and power electronics experience. In particular, candidates must have strong experience with dynamic and transient modeling and simulation of power systems, preferably to include use of averaged-model based representations of converter-coupled generation. Candidates must be familiar with at least one Electromagnetic Transient Program platform. For the MVDC work, candidates must have experience working in some capacity with MV power electronics – design, analysis, build, and/or testing, and an understanding of current state of the art of MVDC converters. The ideal candidate also has an understanding of current state of the art of MVDC components and systems. For the stability analysis of converter-dominated power systems, candidates must have experience performing simulation and/or theoretical based stability analyses. The ideal candidate has experience with on-line stability/network monitoring.
