On April 1, 2009, Dr. Ken Coates, Professor of History and Dean of Arts at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, gave the Maddison Chair Lecture in Northern Justice at Yukon College in Whitehorse, Yukon. The subject of the lecture was:

Arctic Front: The Sovereignty Debate and the Future of the Canadian North.

Dr. Coates has published many books on Yukon and Northern history. His most recent books are A Global History of Indigenous Peoples and Arctic Front: Defending Canada in the Far North (with P. Whitney Lackenbauer, Bill Morrison, and Greg Poelzer). His comments on Aboriginal, northern, science and technology, and education issues appear regularly on radio and television.
