Thematic Network "Northern Nursing Education" led by Heather Exner-Pirot from the University of Saskatchewan was approved at the 18th Council meeting of the of the University of the Arctic in the city of Ulan-Ude. The network aims to improve the quality and availability of nursing education in the circumpolar region. Human resource development in the field of nursing in the north provides an opportunity to improve the well-being of remote northern communities. By creating a well functioning cooperation between institutions which provide decentralized nursing education in Norway, Canada, Siberia, Finland, Iceland and Greenland, the network members will input into development of nursing education in the north. To reach this goal, students and faculty will gather annually at the Innovative Learning Institute on Circumpolar Health for joint research and clinical practice in northern context.

Next year the Summer Institute will be organized in Saskatchewan, 2017 in Tromso and 2018 in Oulu.
